WebVertization is the physical overturning and mixing of soil by means of the shrink–swell behavior of clays. It occurs mostly in Vertisols but also in Entisols, Inceptisols, Mollisols, and Alfisols. It is especially characteristic of soils rich in swelling clays (smectites), which swell when wet and shrink when dry.
